Supporting DC-Area Afghan Refugees
As the US welcomed thousands of Afghan refugees following the Taliban takeover, For the Nations DC experienced an influx of students into our adult English classes. Our student enrollment more than doubled.
Many ESOL students from Afghanistan had limited English—especially the female students. Some could not read or write in their first language. It was hard for them to find an ESOL program that could help them.
But these students found help at For the Nations DC because we have a literacy program designed for people who’ve had little to no education. Mothers with young children were also able to attend classes thanks to free childcare.
Since the fall of 2021, we have served more than 341 adult English students from Afghanistan thanks to the generous support of donors and volunteers. Together, we have built deep, trusting relationships with the refugee community.
We are currently serving an average of 94 adults and 30 children in our daytime English programs. Around 70 percent of the families we are serving are Afghan. Will you help us serve even more?
